Abstract

This study was designed to identify the difference between the body image and self-esteem of children with chronic illness and those of children with acute illness in order to prepare growth and development promoting program for children with chronic illness.
The subjects were 156 school children and adolescences who were 71 children with chronic illness and 85 children with acute illness in K city. The research instruments were Semantic Differential and Body Cathexis Scale for measuring body image and Coopersmith self-inventory for measuring selfesteem. The data were collected from August 1997 to April, 1998. The data were analyzed using Cronbach s alpha, x¢¥-test, t-test, and Pearson s correlation coefficient.

The results were as follows
1. There was a significant difference in body image measured by Semantic Differential between children with chronic illness and children with acute illness(t=-2.84, p=.005).
2. There was a significant difference in body image measured by Body Cathexis Scale between children with chronic illness and children with acute illness(t=-3.72, p=.000).
3. There were significant correlations between Semantic Differential and Body Cathexis Scale in children with chronic illness(r=.390, p=.001) and children with acute illness(r=.522, p=.000).
4. There was a significant difference in self-esteem measured by Coopersmith self-inventory between children with chronic illness and children with acute illness(t=-3.24, p=.001).
5. There were significant correlations between Coopersmith self-inventory and Semantic Differential in children with chronic illness(r=.512, p=.000) and children with acute illness(r=.582, p=.000). There were significant correlations between Coopersmith self-inventory and Body Cathexis Scale in children with chronic illness(r=.486, p=.000) and children with acute illness(r=.617, p=.000).

In conclusion, the child with chronic illness has more negative body image and self-esteem than children with acute illness, and body image and self-esteem were correlated. Therefore body image and self-esteem is useful in understanding the influences of chronic illness on children.
